James Patterson, MD

Dr. Patterson is a native of Alabama and after graduating from Birmingham Southern College he attended medical school at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. He then entered military service where he served as a US Navy Flight Surgeon for 4 years including a tour of duty in Vietnam with a helicopter squadron. Upon completion of his ophthalmology residency at UCLA he moved to Alaska where he practiced for the next 18 years.

While in Alaska, he was a consultant for the US Public Health Service and had the opportunity to hold eye clinics from Point Barrow to the Aleutian Chain. Dr. Patterson completed his fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology in 1977 in Indianapolis, Indiana and was the only American pediatric ophthalmologist north of the lower 48 states until he left Alaska in 1990. After a short stop in the Seattle area, Dr. Patterson, his wife Terry and two daughters moved to Lexington in 1991 where he has practiced since.

Dr. Patterson is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. He specializes in pediatric ophthalmology and eye muscle alignment problems in adults. Dr. Patterson urges that any child, regardless of the age, with a suspected eye problem obtain a professional eye examination, as vision develops between birth and nine years of age. The earlier the problem is discovered and the appropriate treatment instituted, the better the results.
