In 1970, William J. Collis, M.D. founded what is now Kentucky Eye Institute. Dr. Collis returned to his central Kentucky roots after completing a residency in neurology at Cleveland Clinic and the National Institute of Health, an ophthalmology residency at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and both neuro-ophthalmology and retinal fellowships.
In 1973, the practice was first incorporated under the name, William J. Collis, P.S.C. From that point on, the practice began to grow dramatically. From the first satellite office in Winchester, Kentucky, the practice quickly spread to Corbin, followed by Morehead and Mt. Sterling almost simultaneously. In 1997, William J. Collis, P.S.C. became the Kentucky Institute for Eye Health and Surgery, P.S.C., doing business under the name of Kentucky Eye Institute.
The word has spread. Today, KEI has a comprehensive staff of well trained subspecialty and comprehensive ophthalmologists, primary care optometrists, and a dedicated supporting staff of about 85 employees. Our twelve practice locations are easily accessible to most patients residing in central, eastern, southern, and northern Kentucky. Our logo has become readily recognizable inside and outside the eye care community in Kentucky and nationally.
